"Force quitting", "force stopping", "killing an app", "hard resetting", and "swiping away" are all interchangeable terms for the act of fully quitting an app's operations in order to reopen the app and begin functions anew.
The availability of background updates and general application issues are the two primary cases in which Highway Weather users would want to quit and reopen the application. This article will go over both scenarios!
Background Updates
Highway Weather will occasionally display a banner message to users on the home screen indicating there's an application update available. While some of these updates require an update pulled directly from the Google Play Store (Android) or the Apple App Store (iOS), many updates will simply ask you to force quit and reopen the app by "swiping away".
Note: Don't worry - we'll make it perfectly clear within the app whether you need to grab an update from the appropriate app store or if you need to do a simple quit / reopen.

Instructions to Quit / Reopen App |
The "swiping away" action is the non-technical term for "force quitting" an application. We ask users to do this when we'd like to deliver something called a "background update". These background updates include items such as small enhancements and bug fixes, and the force-quit / reopening of the app is what initiates the changes.
Using an Android device?
You'll want to:
- Open Highway Weather
- Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go.
- Then, swipe upward on the app to initiate the "quit".
- Reopening the app will initiate any background updates.
If you're using an older Android device that doesn't support the "swiping" motion to quit an app, you'll need to initiate an app "force stop". Here's how to do so:
- Open the Settings app on the Android device.
- Scroll the list and tap Apps, Applications or Manage apps.
- (optional) On certain devices like Samsung, tap Application Manager.
- Scroll the list to find the app to force quit.
- Tap FORCE STOP.
- Reopening the app will initiate any background updates.

Using an iOS (Apple) device?
Newer iOS devices (iPhone X or later) without the "home button" should follow these instructions:
- Open Highway Weather
- Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go.
- Then, swipe upward on the app to initiate the "quit".
- Reopening the app will initiate any background updates.
However, the specific instructions for force quitting an app may vary depending on the model of your iOS device. Check out this article to find iOS-specific instructions for quitting an app on your particular device.
General Application Issues
Just like many technological entities, software applications can sometimes fall into a "bad state" where they're not functioning as they should (e.g. an app freezing).
This can be due to any number of ultimately benign reasons, and the most common fix for such problems is a "hard reset". This process of force-quitting and reopening an app will, more often than not, allow an application to perform as it should.
Should you feel your app is in need of a quit / reopen, check out the instructions applicable to you below:

- Scroll the list and tap Apps, Applications or Manage apps.
- (optional) On certain devices like Samsung, tap Application Manager.
